Cape Town – South Africa and the UK are looking to increase economic and trade ties by focusing on exporting high-value-added goods to Britain, the Minister of International Relations and Co-operation Maite Nkoana-Mashabane says.

Briefing media at the Taj Hotel in Cape Town, following a bi-lateral meeting with UK foreign secretary William Hague, Nkoana-Mashabane said trade had improved between the two countries last year after declining 37% from 2008 to 2009, amid the global financial crisis. [Read more...]

Transnet buys cranes for Durban Port

Pretoria – Transnet has signed an agreement with a Chinese-based company that will see it acquiring seven cranes for the Durban port.

The state-owned company signed the agreement with Shanghai Zhenhua Heavy Industries Co (ZPMC) to buy seven tandem lift ship-to-shore cranes for the Durban container terminal. The cranes will replace the terminal’s ageing infrastructure as part of the parastatal’s interventions to renew the fleet of port handling equipment to boost efficiency and productivity.

SA, UK commit to increasing trade

Pretoria – South Africa and the United Kingdom have recommitted to the target of doubling bilateral trade between the two countries by 2015.

Following the 9th SA-UK Bilateral Forum, where the South African delegation was led by  International Relations Minister Maite Nkoane-Mashabane, the two countries agreed to focus on building trade and investment in the following sectors: infrastructure and engineering; higher education and skills; energy; natural resources; ICT, financial services; and health, as key sectors in reaching this target. SA to meet UK for trade talks

Pretoria – International Relations and Cooperation Minister Maite Nkoana-Mashabane is to lead a South African delegation to the 9th SA-UK Bilateral Forum from Thursday.

The department said the visit comes within the context of strengthening political and bilateral relations between the two countries.

“The forthcoming forum will be an important milestone in the relations between the two countries as its main thrust will be on implementing the ideals expressed in the Joint Declaration as adopted at the end of President Jacob Zuma’s State Visit to the UK in 2010,” it said. [Read more...]

SA arts, culture sector can lead in economic growth

Cape Town – South Africa’s creative sector, like in many developed nations, has the potential to lead in generating economic growth, says Arts and Culture Minister Paul Mashatile.

This minister said this was the collective view in April of over thousand delegates who attended the historic National Consultative Conference on the contributions of the arts, culture and heritage to the New Growth Path.

He said the gathering had agreed that the “creative sector in South Africa has the potential to be a leading sector in generating economic growth, employment and trade as is the case in many advanced economies.” [Read more...]

UK communicator shares ideas with SA

Pretoria – Former secretary to UK Prime Minister Tony Blair, Alastair Campbell, has shared some of his trade secrets with South African communicators.

Campbell, who says he has been called names like “Hitler” and “Rasputin” by the UK media, was secretary to the former Prime Minister during three elections. However, Campbell says he had terrible relations with the media and admits to having a breakdown in 1986. [Read more...]
