Cape Town – South Africa and the UK are looking to increase economic and trade ties by focusing on exporting high-value-added goods to Britain, the Minister of International Relations and Co-operation Maite Nkoana-Mashabane says.

Briefing media at the Taj Hotel in Cape Town, following a bi-lateral meeting with UK foreign secretary William Hague, Nkoana-Mashabane said trade had improved between the two countries last year after declining 37% from 2008 to 2009, amid the global financial crisis. [Read more...]

SA, UK commit to increasing trade

Pretoria – South Africa and the United Kingdom have recommitted to the target of doubling bilateral trade between the two countries by 2015.

Following the 9th SA-UK Bilateral Forum, where the South African delegation was led by  International Relations Minister Maite Nkoane-Mashabane, the two countries agreed to focus on building trade and investment in the following sectors: infrastructure and engineering; higher education and skills; energy; natural resources; ICT, financial services; and health, as key sectors in reaching this target. SA to meet UK for trade talks

Pretoria – International Relations and Cooperation Minister Maite Nkoana-Mashabane is to lead a South African delegation to the 9th SA-UK Bilateral Forum from Thursday.

The department said the visit comes within the context of strengthening political and bilateral relations between the two countries.

“The forthcoming forum will be an important milestone in the relations between the two countries as its main thrust will be on implementing the ideals expressed in the Joint Declaration as adopted at the end of President Jacob Zuma’s State Visit to the UK in 2010,” it said. [Read more...]

Pretoria – Former secretary to UK Prime Minister Tony Blair, Alastair Campbell, has shared some of his trade secrets with South African communicators.

Campbell, who says he has been called names like “Hitler” and “Rasputin” by the UK media, was secretary to the former Prime Minister during three elections. However, Campbell says he had terrible relations with the media and admits to having a breakdown in 1986. [Read more...]

SA, UK partner in social work exchange programme

Pretoria – South Africa is set to launch a social work exchange programme in partnership with a skills development agency from the United Kingdom on Thursday.

The programme – which is a collaboration between the Health and Welfare Sector Education and Training Authority (HWSETA) and UK-based Skills for Care – is a joint initiative involving research and exchange of social workers in England and South Africa through the two skills development agencies.
